Q&A with Sherrie Aaron, candidate for District 3 seat on Columbus Council
Editor’s note: This is one of the Ledger-Enquirer Q&As with candidates running for a contested seat on the Columbus Council. Early voting for the 2026 local nonpartisan election, which coincides with the Georgia primary, begins April 27, and election day is May 19.
The 10-member Columbus Council’s District 3 seat is filled by Bruce Huff, who isn’t seeking reelection. Competing for the seat are U.S. Army veteran and entrepreneur Sherrie Aaron, pastor and educator Jake Golden IV and filmmaker Zack Lee.
Here is the Ledger-Enquirer’s emailed interview with Aaron:
Why are you running for this position?
“I am running for Columbus City Council District 3 because I believe our community deserves leadership that is present, responsive and accountable. I have spent years working directly with families, youth and small businesses, and I understand the real challenges people face every day. This is not about politics for me; it is about service. I am committed to listening, building trust and taking action to improve quality of life, strengthen neighborhoods and create real opportunities for the people of District 3.”
Why should District 3 residents vote for you?
“Residents should vote for me because I bring proven leadership, real community involvement and a strong work ethic. I have managed organizations, led teams and created programs that directly impact lives. I am accessible, I show up, and I follow through. I am not afraid to learn, collaborate and make tough decisions. My focus is on results, not titles. I will be a voice for the people, ensuring District 3 is heard, respected and prioritized.”
What is the most significant problem you want to address, and what will be your solution if elected?
“One of the most significant issues is the lack of economic opportunity and resources in parts of District 3. I will focus on supporting small businesses, improving workforce development and creating pathways for youth employment. By partnering with local organizations, schools and employers, we can build stronger pipelines to jobs and entrepreneurship. I also want to ensure city resources are distributed equitably, so every neighborhood has the opportunity to thrive.”
What is your occupational and educational background?
“I am a U.S. Army veteran, entrepreneur and licensed Realtor in Georgia and Alabama. I have experience managing multiple businesses and programs that generate over one million dollars annually. I oversee operations, budgeting and teams of more than 25 staff members. My educational background includes some college coursework along with extensive hands-on leadership and management experience. My career has been rooted in service, organization and creating opportunities for others.”
What is your community involvement and history of leadership roles?
“I am deeply involved in the Columbus community. I serve as chairman of the Land Bank Board and lead Jag Promises, a support community for mothers impacted by gun violence, while also creating youth-focused prevention programs. I am a committee member of Teen Impact Society and involved with the 706 Columbus initiative. I am also the founder of a long-running annual event supporting local barbers and stylists. My leadership has always centered on service, empowerment and building stronger communities.”
What else should the Ledger-Enquirer’s readers know about you and your campaign?
“Voters should know that my campaign is rooted in listening, accountability and action. I am not running to hold a seat; I am running to do the work. I believe in transparency, community engagement and making decisions that reflect the voices of the people. This campaign is about bringing fresh leadership and real results to District 3. I am committed to being present, accessible and focused on moving our community forward together.”
