Q&A with Margot Schley, seeking reelection to Muscogee County School Board
Editor’s note: This is one of the Ledger-Enquirer Q&As with candidates running for a contested seat on the Muscogee County School District Board. Early voting for the 2026 local nonpartisan election, which coincides with the Georgia primary, begins April 27, and election day is May 19.
The contest for the District 8 seat on the nine-member Muscogee County School District Board is between one-term incumbent Margot Schley and challenger Joshua Smith.
Here is the Ledger-Enquirer’s emailed interview with Schley:
Why are you seeking reelection to the MCSD Board?
“I’m seeking reelection because I believe strong public schools are at the heart of a strong community. Muscogee County has wonderful students, dedicated teachers and families who care deeply about education, and it has been an honor to serve them.”
Why should District 8 residents vote for you?
“I try to approach this role with common sense, respect for different perspectives and a real commitment to our students. I listen carefully, ask questions and work with others to make thoughtful decisions that benefit our schools and our community.”
What is your most significant accomplishment as a board member?
“One of the things I’m most proud of is being part of a board that works together to support our schools and keep the focus on what matters most — our students and the people who teach them every day.”
What is the most significant issue you want to advocate for, and what will be your solution if reelected?
“One of the most important issues is making sure every student in Muscogee County has the opportunity to succeed. That means supporting great teachers, maintaining safe and welcoming schools, and continuing to strengthen the programs that prepare our students for the future.”
What is your occupational and educational background?
“My professional background is in banking. Specifically, community development. I’ve also been actively involved in the community through volunteering for 26 years. My education includes a bachelor’s of arts in political science.”
What is your community involvement and history of leadership roles?
“Completed Leadership Georgia, United Way Campaign Cabinet, Junior League of Columbus, Historic Columbus Board, Columbus Symphony Orchestra Board, Chair for Dancing Stars of Columbus, Rainey-McCullers School of the Arts Foundation Board. Currently serving on the board of Historic Linwood Foundation. Serving on the MCSD School Board has been one of the most meaningful ways I’ve been able to give back, and I value working with fellow board members, educators and families to strengthen public education in Columbus.”
What else should the Ledger-Enquirer’s readers know about you and your campaign?
“This campaign is about continuing the work of supporting excellent schools for every child in Muscogee County. I care deeply about our schools because they shape the future of Columbus. I am grateful for the opportunity to keep serving our students, families and educators.”
