Q&A with Laketha Ashe, candidate for District 7 seat on Columbus Council

Editor’s note: This is one of the Ledger-Enquirer Q&As with candidates running for a contested seat on the Columbus Council. Early voting for the 2026 local nonpartisan election, which coincides with the Georgia primary, begins April 27, and election day is May 19.

The 10-member Columbus Council’s District 7 seat is filled by Joanne Cogle, who is a candidate in the Columbus mayoral race. Candidates to succeed her as the council’s District 7 representative are financial services and insurance professional Laketha Ashe, communications professional Chiara Richardson and Dragonfly Trails executive director Rebecca “Becca” Zajac.

Here is the Ledger-Enquirer’s emailed interview with Ashe:

Why are you running for this position?

“I’m running because District 7 deserves leadership that is present, accessible, and committed to results. I’ve spent years actively working in this community, building relationships, creating opportunities, and advocating for people. When I saw the needs of our district and the direction of the race, I felt a responsibility to step forward. This isn’t about a title; it’s about ensuring our neighborhoods are seen, heard, and prioritized in decisions that impact our daily lives.”

Why should District 7 residents vote for you?

“Voters should choose me because I bring lived experience, consistency, and a proven record of service. I’ve been showing up in this community for over two decades, not just during election season. I understand the challenges people face because I’ve worked alongside them. I am committed to being accessible, accountable, and action-driven. My approach is simple: listen first, then take meaningful action that reflects the needs of the people.”

What is the most significant problem you want to address, and what will be your solution if you are elected?

“A major issue in District 7 is the lack of consistent neighborhood engagement and equitable investment. Many communities feel overlooked when it comes to resources and development. My solution begins with strengthening neighborhood engagement through regular forums and direct communication. I will advocate for intentional investment in infrastructure, safe housing, and economic opportunities. When residents are connected and included in decision-making, we build stronger, safer communities.”

What is your occupational and educational background?

“I have over 20 years of experience in financial services and insurance, where accountability and problem-solving are essential. I am licensed in Life, Health, and Annuities, and recently obtained my Property and Casualty license. I hold a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Psychology, with a minor in Business Administration, and I am currently pursuing my doctorate. My background equips me to understand people, systems, and the importance of informed decision-making.”

What is your community involvement and history of leadership roles?

“My community involvement spans over two decades. I am the founder of Still Standing Initiatives (formally Columbus Georgia Reloaded), focused on empowerment and community connection. I serve as a board member for Valley Healthcare Systems and have completed leadership programs including the Columbus Citizens Government Academy and the Congressional Black Caucus Institute, and recently was recognized and received the Key to the City of Panama City, FL. My work has consistently centered on creating opportunities, supporting local talent, and contributing to the cultural and economic growth of our community.”

What else should the L-E’s readers know about you and your campaign?

“This campaign is built on presence, consistency, and genuine connection. I’ve been here, and I will continue showing up long after the election. I believe leadership requires transparency, accountability, and action. My focus is ensuring District 7 is no longer overlooked, but prioritized and positioned for growth. This campaign is about people, and making sure every voice matters and every neighborhood has a seat at the table.”
