Remembering the Beauregard tornado victims

Remembering the Beauregard tornado victims

They never saw it coming. Residents in small-town Beauregard were relaxing after church, having a late lunch, watching the rainy afternoon from a front porch and playing in the yard with their siblings. March 3, 2019 was like any other Sunday. But everything changed at 2:03 p.m. when an EF-4 tornado turned the town upside down. 23 people died. Dozens of homes were destroyed. Children were ripped from their parents’ arms.

To mark the one-year anniversary of the storm, the Ledger-Enquirer wanted to honor the memories of the men, women and children who lost their lives on that devastating afternoon. Who were they? Who did they love? What were their dreams? These are their stories.

A deadly tornado. Grieving families. A makeshift morgue. This is the coroner’s story.

"Kids aren’t supposed to die. ...That’s always the hardest part of this job." Bill Harris jumped into his truck and drove into Beauregard as a twister ravaged the town. He had a job to do.
