Auburn is one of safest cities in AL, report finds. Here are rankings for our area

One of the safest cities in Alabama is right here in the Chattahoochee Valley, according to SafeWise’s annual safest city report.

Auburn is ranked No. 17 in the state for safest cities, an jump of 12 spots from last year’s report. It’s the only city in the Chattahoochee Valley to be ranked in the top 20, but other area cities were included on the report.

Phenix City and Opelika rank at Nos. 45 and 46, respectively. According to SafeWise’s study, Phenix City reported 6.4 violent crimes per 1,000 people and 36.2 property crimes per 1,000 people. Opelika reported 5.5 violent crimes and 39.4 property crimes.

Auburn’s numbers are much lower, coming in at 3.7 violent crimes and 21.3 property crimes per 1,000 people. The safest city in the state is Rainbow City, with 0.1 violent crimes and 5.2 property crimes per 1,000 people.

To identify the safest cities in the U.S., the home security website used findings from its “State of Safety” survey and combined it with 2018 FBI crime report statistics as well as U.S. Census population data. Then the results were used to create the rankings.
