Former Russell County sheriff dies at 71

A former Russell County sheriff has died after a law enforcement career than spanned more than 40 years.

Tommy Boswell, 71, died early Saturday morning in a hospital in Columbus. Boswell was born and raised in Russell County and attended Auburn University.

He went on to become an investigator for the Russell County District Attorney’s Office and eventually chief investigator for the Sheriff’s Office.

Boswell retired as Russell County sheriff in 2010, after serving more than 20 years in the position.

While sheriff, Boswell helped create the Russell County Fueling Authority and also made sure that the jail had new offices, a upgraded training facility and an expanded jail.

The jail and office currently being used in Russell County were built on Boswell’s watch.

Boswell is survived by numerous family members including his wife and daughter, as well as numerous grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
