Auburn University confirms first case of monkeypox on campus

Auburn University confirmed its first case of monkeypox over the weekend.

The university said the student is isolating outside the Auburn area and that close contacts of the student have been notified.

In the instance other cases of monkeypox are confirmed close contacts of said individuals will be notified and be given information and instructions, according to the university’s statement.

The Alabama Department of Health and AU Medical Clinic will continue to monitor the situation, according to a press release from the university.

Monkeypox is a virus that can spread through contact with skin lesions, bodily fluids, and can be transmitted through respiratory droplets and exposure to contaminated surfaces or objects, according to the World Health Organization.

Some symptoms of monkeypox are fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes, back pain, lack of energy and skin lesions. The virus typically lasts between 2-4 weeks.
