Police in Alabama are investigating a homicide in which they said a man was shot dead while in his pickup truck with his 5-year-old grandson.

Officers responded to a call about a shooting just before 8 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, the Birmingham Police Department said in a Nov. 12 news release.

At the scene, police saw a pickup truck in the roadway and a driver “slumped over behind the wheel, suffering from a gunshot wound,” the police department said in a Nov. 11 video posted on Facebook.

The victim — later identified as 45-year-old Enrique Cortes — was in the vehicle with his 5-year-old grandson at the time of the shooting, according to authorities.

A preliminary investigation revealed a separate vehicle pulled up on the road next to Cortes’ pickup truck, and an unknown suspect fired multiple shots into the vehicle, authorities said.

The child was unharmed, and a bystander rushed him to a nearby CVS for safety, police said.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue pronounced Cortes dead at the scene. His grandson was taken to the East Precinct and later reunited with family, according to police.

Police said a suspect and motive have not been determined and the investigation is ongoing.
