Georgia Power to start disconnections again. Here’s how to get help paying electric bill

Georgia Power customers impacted by COVID-19 have until July 15, 2020, to sign up for a special payment plan to handle overdue balances.

As the economy was impacted by COVID-19 in mid-March, Georgia’s Public Service Commission and Georgia Power agreed not to turn off services to any of its 2.4 million customers for non-payment.

“After July 15th, disconnections will begin again,” Georgia Power Media Relations Specialist Allison Gregoire said.

The impact of COVID-19 on the local economy is still being calculated as Muscogee County continues to hover at a 10.7% unemployment rate, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Georgia Power said customers who enroll in the special payment plan can pay past-due balances with no interest or late fees over a six-month timeframe beginning October 2020.

On Tuesday, a 3-2 vote by the Georgia Public Service Commission approved a request to allow Georgia Power to recover $7.7 million in costs from their customers. These are costs related to the COVID-19 pandemic, including employee overtime, personal protective equipment and cleaning supplies.

Customers with delinquent bills can also enroll for the plan by calling Georgia Power’s customer service at 1-888-660-5890.
