This historic Georgia town ranks among top spots in the nation for spring road trips
Spring break is on the horizon, and travelers are expected to flock to a historic Georgia destination.
Savannah ranks No. 10 on a list of warm-weather places that people want to visit on road trips this spring, according to AAA.
The organization made the rankings after it studied data for trips booked to cities near beaches, deserts or tropical landscapes. The data comes from the TripTik digital tool, which people can use to map out their trips, officials said in a March 8 news release.
“The destinations in our release represent the most popular routes our members select for planning a road trip in March, April and May of this year to warmer weather destinations,” AAA spokesperson Ellen Edmonds told McClatchy News in an email.
Savannah earned a spot in the rankings as AAA said travelers are craving getaways to warm vacation spots.
“People taking tropical and beach vacations this time of year isn’t new,” Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in the release. “It’s the number of bookings we’re seeing, with increases in the triple digits over last year and even beating pre-pandemic volumes.”
Savannah has long been recognized for its charm and drew 14.8 million visitors in 2019, according to the most recent data available on the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce website. The city has a recorded history dating back to 1733 and is home to several historic sites.
Savannah isn’t the only place in the Peach State to earn national recognition.
Last month, a Jekyll Island beach was named one of the best in the country. Driftwood Beach made the list after TripAdvisor said it studied ratings and reviews that travelers left in 2021.
In May 2021, the website ranked three Georgia hotels — including two in Atlanta and one in Savannah — among the nation’s best places to stay, McClatchy News reported.
This time around, the top-ranking road trip destination was Orlando, Florida. Rounding out the top five on the list were Las Vegas; Naples, Florida; Phoenix; and San Diego.
