Flames tore through a home after a reported lightning strike in Georgia, photos show.

A camera captured smoke billowing over the roof after officials said the house caught fire on Thursday, June 2.

Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services said someone called 911 to report seeing a neighbor’s attic on fire. Officials believe lightning hit the house while the homeowner was out of town.

Firefighters responded about 6:30 p.m. to the house on Brackin Trace in Grayson, roughly 35 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta.

“Crews worked hard to contain the bulk of the fire to the garage and the attic above the garage, but fire did extend to part of the upstairs living space and smoke damage extended throughout the home,” officials wrote in a Facebook post.

Firefighters said the homeowner’s relatives came to the scene “to help secure belongings and begin the recovery process.” No one was hurt in the blaze.

The same day as the fire, the National Weather Service issued several severe storm warnings in the northern part of the state. The alerts warned of the potential for penny-sized hail and 60-mph winds.
