1-year-old dies after being left in hot car outside Walgreens store, Georgia cops say
A 1-year-old died after being left in a hot car outside a Georgia pharmacy, multiple news outlets reported.
The toddler’s mom was coming out of a Walgreens store when she found her child unresponsive on Thursday, June 30, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office told WGCL.
Deputies said the child was discovered in Danielsville, near Athens and roughly 85 miles northeast of Atlanta. On the day of the incident, temperatures soared into the 90s, according to WAGA and the National Weather Service.
The 1-year-old was taken to Piedmont Regional Hospital in Athens and later was pronounced dead, news outlets reported.
The sheriff’s office said the child’s mom worked at Walgreens and was in the store for “an undetermined amount of time.” She is believed to have returned to the parking lot three to four hours later, when the temperature inside the car had gone above 100 degrees, WXIA reported.
News outlets didn’t report whether the mom faced charges, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is helping in the case, according to WGCL.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office didn’t immediately share additional information with McClatchy News on July 1.
