A 4-year-old drowned after falling into a river while fishing with his family, Georgia police say.

Albany police said they responded to the Flint River around 2:40 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11, after reports of a child falling into the water. The boy had been fishing with his family.

After the child fell in, his father jumped in to try and rescue him before calling for help, according to WALB.

Officials immediately began searching the banks of the river, according to a department news conference shared to Facebook.

Following an hours-long search, the child’s body was recovered around 5 p.m. after it washed ashore near the Radium Springs Boat Landing, police said. Firefighters performed CPR but the boy was pronounced dead.

The boat landing is about 3 miles from where the family was fishing, WALB reported.

Albany is about 180 miles south of Atlanta.
