A 10-year-old was among three children killed in a crash on Interstate 95 near the Florida-Georgia line, state troopers say.

It happened at about 7:40 a.m on Saturday, July 1, in Nassau County, north of Jacksonville, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

A 10-year-old, 12-year-old and 14-year-old died at the scene, and two others were critically hurt, troopers said. None of the children have been identified.

Investigators said a sedan carrying six people was traveling south on the highway when, “for an unknown reason,” the driver stopped in the center lane of the bridge separating Georgia and Florida.

An SUV traveling behind it didn’t have time to react and rammed the back of the sedan, according to troopers.

The sedan’s driver, a 24-year-old man, suffered serious injuries, troopers said in a report.

Two other passengers, a 47-year-old and a 14-year-old, had critical injuries. Their conditions weren’t known as of Monday, July 3.

Investigators said the six people in the sedan were from Bay Shore, New York, a hamlet on the South Shore of Long Island.

The 23-year-old driver of the SUV, from Apex, North Carolina, suffered minor injuries, troopers said.

Authorities didn’t release additional information.
