Engaged volunteer firefighters thrown from fire truck during rollover crash, GA cops say
Two volunteer firefighters engaged to be married were critically injured when their fire engine overturned, Georgia officials said.
It happened at about 4 p.m. Saturday, July 15, in Upson County, according to Georgia State Patrol.
Crews were responding to a crash when the driver lost control on a curve, causing the fire truck to flip, troopers said. Two volunteers, identified by Monroe County Emergency Services as couple Logan Gordy and Trista Cheeks, were ejected, according to troopers.
Both were flown to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta with life-threatening injuries, according to a Facebook post from emergency service officials.
Gordy and Cheeks are members of the Rock Hill Volunteer Fire Department and are set to wed in October, WSB-TV reported, citing officials.
Gordy is also a jail officer with the Upson County Sheriff’s Office.
“He has a service heart, he wants to serve his community,” Sheriff Dan Kilgore said of Gordy, the son of a firefighter who took an interest in public safety at an early age.
“As soon as he was old enough ... he became a volunteer firefighter,” Kilgore told McClatchy News. “I think that says a lot about his character.”
In a July 16 update, Monroe County Emergency Services said Cheeks is recovering after surgery but still has a long road ahead.
Her fiance had much more severe injuries, however, and was placed in a medically induced coma, officials said.
“He needs a miracle,” officials said of Gordy. “Surgeons have advised there is nothing they can do for him currently. Please continue to cover this young couple ... with your prayers.”
Upson County is about 75 miles south of Atlanta.
