Jimmy Carter returns to Plains for funeral, burial. What to know about Georgia ceremonies

The week-long funeral events to honor former President Jimmy Carter concludes Thursday with a funeral in Washington, D.C., and a return to his hometown of Plains.

The Joint Task Force-National Capitol Region announced a couple of days after Carter’s death on Dec. 29 that state funeral proceedings would be held for him in both Georgia and Washington, D.C., including stops at his hometown in Plains.

After nearly a full week of events, Carter was eulogized by President Joe Biden in the nation’s capital. Then a flight took him to Fort Moore, just south of Columbus, so he could be returned to Plains.

Where is Jimmy Carter being buried?

Carter will be buried next to his wife, Rosalynn Carter, in Plains. The rural Georgia town only has about 600 residents, but the Carters made the city a much more well-known area during his four years in the White House. Carter spent his final years in Plains, too.

The motorcade’s last stop Thursday will be at the Carter family’s residence for a private burial. Before the family arrives at the residence, the U.S. Navy will conduct a mission man formation flyover in honor of Carter’s naval service and time as commander-in-chief.
