This is the best clothing store in GA — and one of 50 best in US, NYT ranking says. Here’s why
Atlanta may be known for its music and film industries, but it is emerging as one of the leading spots for fashion and style. The New York Times recently compiled a list of the “50 best clothing stores in America” and the Atlanta retailer, Mashburn, made the cut.
The flagship store in Atlanta made the list among other fashion-forward cities like New York, Beverly Hills and Chicago. The retailer has grown to 18 locations across the nation and is working to put Atlanta on the fashion map.
The Mashburn vibe
Mashburn opened its first men’s shop in Atlanta’s historic Westside district back in 2007, turning a former industrial space into a warm, grown-up clubhouse of sorts. The store mixes its soft-shouldered jackets, jeans, and classic shirts with a tightly edited selection of shoes, ties and accessories geared toward an updated Southern-preppy look.
Sid Mashburn, hailing from Mississippi, has been in the business of menswear for 18 years and considers his brand to be accessible “from Mississippi to Milan.” It’s a place, according to Mashburn, “to pick up a pair of jeans or get measured for a custom suit.”
Mashburn’s wife, Ann, opened up her own shop next door to the original store and it began as “the feminine version of what Sid was doing.” Her stores are as much about the physical space as the clothing.
The stores present as places to “be,” not just to “buy,” and they offer Hubs Peanuts to the customers while they shop, simply because they are Mashburn’s favorites.
