College-aged students know the urgency and importance of meeting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) deadline because it is the form that unlocks most financial aid for college and institutions use it to determine eligibility for their own aid.

If you haven’t filed your FAFSA yet for the 2025–26 school year, it’s not too late to make the federal window for college financial aid, but it’s closing soon. Every week costs students available aid, so applicants need to act now.

The federal FAFSA deadline

Most school-specific priority deadlines have passed, but the federal cutoff hasn’t.

  • June 30, 2026: 2025–26 FAFSA must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Central Time
  • September 14, 2026: Corrections or updates to a submitted FAFSA due

Even though Georgia does not set a single hard state deadline, students shouldn’t wait.

What’s aid still available

Filing late doesn’t mean filing empty-handed. Some aid is still available, and even late filers can still be eligible for federal student aid.

  • Maximum Pell Grant for 2025–26 is $7,395
  • State and school funds may be limited
  • Schools receive a fixed allocation of certain kinds of funding, and it runs out.

Missed or approaching financial aid deadlines

If you waited to submit applications, there’s a good chance you’ve left behind. Students who file within the first three months of the FAFSA opening tend to receive twice as many grants, on average, as those who file later.

  • The FAFSA window opened October 2025 and it is a first-come-first-served distribution
  • School-specific priority deadlines at many Georgia institutions have already passed for 2025–26.
  • Campus-based aid is distributed from a fixed pool, and once it’s gone, it’s gone.

2026 - 2027 FAFSA is already open

The 2026–27 FAFSA became available in September 2025, and covers fall 2026, spring 2027, and summer 2027. Prospective students should file as soon as possible because aid is awarded until funds are depleted. You can file for free at StudentAid.gov.

The best approach to applying for financial aid is work ahead. Be aware of the approaching deadlines and get your application in as soon as possible. Don’t leave money on the table.
