This one major change could save GA drivers money at the pump as prices skyrocket
Georgia gas prices are rising to record-breaking numbers, so everyone is looking to save money at the pump. One of the easiest ways to spend less is to simply slow down.
Statistically, the faster and more aggressively you drive, the more fuel you burn and the more often you have to fill up. The average fuel price in Georgia today is $4.01, so it can add up really quickly.
Getting cheaper miles
Driving slower can save gas, but, according to the US Department of Energy, drivers get better results driving steadily and avoiding hard acceleration and braking.
Here’s what the data shows:
- Gas mileage drops rapidly at speeds above 50 mph
- Every 5 mph over 50 mph is roughly equivalent to paying an extra $0.27 per gallon
- Compact SUVs lose about 5 mpg when driven at 75 mph versus 55 mph, according to Consumer Reports
- SUV drivers pay approximately $400 more a year
- Aggressive driving can lower fuel economy by 15% to 30% at highway speeds and 10% to 40% in stop-and-go traffic
Other tips for saving money on gas
Beyond slowing down, try these:
- Avoid hauling cargo on the roof
- Turn the engine off if you’re parked more than a minute
- Removing 100 pounds of unnecessary weight improves MPG by about 1%
- Skip premium fuel, if it is not required for your vehicle
- Use cruise control on the highway
- Check tire pressure; under inflated tires are wasteful
- Combine errands into one trip
- Carpool when you can
There’s not much we can do to lower those prices at the pump, but changing a few driving habits could make a small difference in your gas budget.
