Meteorologist Chris Bruin was determined to out-bike the storm moving across town Tuesday as he pedaled along the Chattahoochee Riverwalk.

He made it three miles before the lightning caught up with him and he decided to meet back up with his producer and cameraman to continue The Weather Channel’s live broadcast.

“We’ve got a one-two punch of severe weather,” he said.

Dispatched from Atlanta, the team is covering severe weather in Columbus, a “high-risk” area for strong storms with damaging winds and potential tornadoes. Bruin said that threat has mostly passed, but throughout the afternoon they’ll monitor the surrounding areas.

In between broadcasts, the trio huddled in a parking garage across from Riverwalk to stay dry, sipping on coffee from Iron Bank Coffee Company.

Bruin said he anticipates strong storms tomorrow too, but the Chattahoochee Valley will cool down later this week. The Weather Channel is continuing to monitor central and south Georgia for tornadoes and damaging weather.

The tornado threat will lessen tomorrow, not to zero, and hail is a concern as temperatures lower, Bruin said.

“It just takes one tornado in one community, and it’s just devastating,” Bruin said. “A lot of tornado warnings are expected in Georgia this afternoon and this evening.”
