NWS warns of “brutally, dangerously cold” temperatures, gusty winds in Middle Georgia. Here’s more.
It is “some of the coldest air Georgia has seen in 5 to 8 years,” and it is quickly approaching Middle Georgia, warned the National Weather Service in Peachtree City this afternoon via a text alert.
This forecast comes just in time for Santa’s visit, but a white Christmas still isn’t in the cards for Middle Georgia.
So, what is?
Well, it looks like the main threat will be extremely cold temperatures and gusty winds.
NWS issued a wind chill watch earlier today, but it was soon upgraded to a wind chill warning this afternoon.
Wind Chill Watch V. Wind Chill Warning
A wind chill watch simply means to be prepared because high winds and low temperatures are possible.
However, when a wind chill warning is in effect, action should be taken. A wind chill warning means that frostbite and hypothermia could happen in minutes.
In Middle Georgia, the wind chill warning is expected to produce winds up to 20 mph, with gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph.
The temperatures on Friday could dip into the low teens and Saturday isn’t looking too much warmer, with highs in the low 30s.
The NWS said these temperatures are “brutally, dangerously cold,” so it is best to limit outdoor activity while the warning is in effect.
Wind Chill and Low Temperature Safety
Here are some other tips for the frigid temperatures and chilly wind gusts:
Cover all exposed skin; dress in layers and wear a hat/gloves if you need to be outside
Bring pets indoors; if it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them
Keep flammables at least three feet away from space heaters
Fill up your tank and make sure your vehicle is cold weather ready
