As Georgia residents are well aware, hurricane season is already here, and as Tropical Storm Helene barrels toward land, it’s time to get prepared.

While everyone knows to stock up on staples like milk and bread, in case you lose power for a few days, you may have to think beyond that.

The basics for every home

To have enough water for everyone, you should reserve one gallon per day per person. In addition to having enough water, stock up on these essentials as well:

  • Canned tuna

  • Canned vegetables and fruits

  • Soups

  • Rice

  • Pasta

  • Cereal

  • Instant coffee/tea

  • Baby formula

Easy and convenient snacks

Keep in mind items that are high in protein for energy, good sources of nutrients and are low-effort to prepare

  • Jerky

  • Trail mix

  • Dried fruit

  • Protein bars

  • Cookies/crackers

  • Popcorn

Don’t forget the animals

Preparedness should also include supplies for any pets in the home.

  • Dry food - stock up on a 7 to 10-day supply

  • Canned food - this can help with hydration if water is low

  • Treats - Some familiar treats can help reduce stress for your pets during an emergency.

To be fully prepared for a weather emergency, you need supplies that will sustain the household during power disruptions or limited travel.

Grab these emergency tools

  • Flashlight with extra batteries - essential for lighting during power outages.

  • Battery-powered or hand-crank NOAA Weather Radio - for weather updates and emergency information.

  • Multi-tool or basic tools - pliers and a wrench to turn off utilities if necessary.

Supplies for cooking meals

  • Manual can opener for opening canned goods.

  • Cooking utensils - metal pots and pans, as well as a camp stove or portable cooking method if electricity is unavailable.

  • Disposable plates, utensils, and cups - for convenience during cleanup.

First aid and comfort items

  • First aid kit - include basic medical supplies such as bandages, antiseptics, and any prescription medications.

  • Sanitation items - hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, toilet paper, feminine hygiene products.

  • Bedding - Blankets, pillows and linens

  • Entertainment items - books, games, or puzzles to keep up morale

Personal items

  • Important documents - copies of insurance policies, identification, and bank account records in a waterproof container.

  • Cash - small denominations, as ATMs may not be available.

  • Clothing - clothes suitable for the weather conditions.

By collecting these items ahead of time, you can save yourself the chaos of trying to assemble them once the weather starts. This will ensure the challenges are handled effectively and safely.
