Crashes an issue in Columbus as snow leads to icy roads. See updates for surrounding areas
The fallout of about 3 inches of snow in Columbus persisted Thursday, as the Columbus Police Department reported frequent crashes on icy roads.
CPD said in a Facebook post that officers are responding to multiple crashes and reports of vehicles sliding in several areas around the city.
These areas include:
Woolridge Road and Ivy Park Drive
Mountainbrook Drive and Wethersville Road
Greystone at Columbus on Whittlesey Blvd
3700 Block of Forrest Road
J.R. Allen Parkway, ramps included (both eastbound and westbound)
Whitesville Road and Bridgemill Drive
Police are suggesting to avoid travel if possible.
“If you must be on the roads, drive slowly, allow extra time and keep a safe distance from other vehicles,” the post said.
Chance Corbett, director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management for Columbus, told the Ledger-Enquirer there were also issues around the uptown area Thursday morning. He said they’ve also seen issues on Millet Road, Bradley Park near Brookstone, Mobley Road, Dirk Way, Bunker Hill and River Road.
Harris County road conditions
Melissa Price, Harris County Emergency Management Agency director, told the Ledger-Enquirer all county roads and state roads in Harris County are still “pretty messy.”
“Any road that does not get direct sunlight is still pure ice,” Price said.
She suggests people not drive in Harris County at this time.
Price said Lick Skillet Road is impassable.
Russell County road conditions
Russell County Emergency Management Agency director David Martin told the Ledger-Enquirer the main thoroughfares in Russell County are “pretty much clear.”
He said some rural roads in the county (such as Freeman, Sanford Road and State Route 26) have “very large” icy spots. Martin said county crews have been trying to sand these areas.
“As far as the roads within the city (Phenix City) and main thoroughfares, I think we’re good to go,” Martin said.
Martin said a few accidents have been reported Thursday with vehicles sliding and hitting one another.
