Attack on Police

Two Columbus policemen shot and killed a Phenix City Negro who was caught burglarizing a First Avenue pawn shop early today, police said. Otis Young, 31, Phenix City, advanced on policemen with a pocket knife when they found him in the Central Pawn Shop.

Governor’s Race

U.S. Rep. Howard (Bo) Callaway and Democratic gubernatorial nominee Lester Maddox clashed over a Maddox proposal that the federal government’s school desegregation guidelines be outlawed in Georgia.

Religion

Children from the Columbus Seventh-day Adventist Church will visit residential areas through October in the church’s annual drive for international mission and welfare program.
