Weltner Quits

Rep. Charles L. Weltner, D-Ga., said today he is withdrawing as the Democratic nominee to succeed himself because he cannot vote for hardline segregrationist Lester G. Maddox, the party’s nominee for governor. “I cannot compromise with hate,” said Weltner, dropping the bombshell at a news conference. Weltner said his principles forced him to withdraw rather than keep a party loyalty pledge.

Reds in Viet Nam

The Soviet Union acknowledged for the first time Sunday it is sending soldiers to North Viet Nam to train anti-aircraft units. An account in the armed forces paper Red Star said the Soviet soldiers are warmly received by the North Vietnamese and showered with gifts of fruit and rice.

Religion

An African college student, who said Southern Baptists had sent missionaries to his native land to convert him to Christianity, was turned away Sunday for the second time from an all-white church.
