Grover L. Knox, chief of traffic of the Columbus Police Dept. said today that an affidavit held by Lester Maddox charging segregation activities at Callaway Gardens is not based on truth. Callaway denied the charges today, saying there is not a shred of truth.

War Spending

The Viet Nam war pushed military spending to an unprecedented “peacetime” level of almost $63 billion, at an annual rate, during the first three months of the current fiscal year.

Road ‘Beauty’ Bids

A low bid for Lady Bird Johnson’s beautification program on the Columbus-Manchester Expressway has been received. J.B. Lawrence was named as the apparent low man in bids opened Thursday.
