Fifty years ago today, October 27, 1966

Tragic Ambush

U.S. troops who set up an ambush for the Viet Cong eight miles north of Saigon opened fire on a group of friendly Vietnamese by mistake early today, killing eight civilians including women and children. Another seven were wounded.

Fears Maddox

A prominent psychiatrist and author said Wednesday he “fears” four years of federal troops and racial disorder if Georgia elects Lester Maddox as governor. Dr. Corbett Thigpen of Augusta, co-author of the bestseller “Three Faces of Eve,” charged that Maddox “preaches love and practices hate.”
