Callaway
Howard (Bo) Callaway said here Friday that he disagrees with some of the beliefs and methods of the John Birch Society and pledged to abide by the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Callaway told the Atlanta Press Club he has never been a member of the ultra-conservative society and has never raised money for it.
Maddox
Lester Maddox, who pledged Friday to work for construction of a state medical college in Muscogee County, was scheduled to bring his campaign for governor to this city today. Maddox said in Columbus Friday that he will push for the construction of a $20-million-to-$22-million state medical college in Muscogee County if he is elected next week.
Pastor Dies
Dr. Sidney A. Gates, 59, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Columbus, was pronounced dead of an apparent heart attack on arrival at The Medical Center Friday night. Dr. Gates was stricken while watching the Columbus-Jordan football game at Memorial Stadium.
