Death for Speck

Richard Franklin Speck was found guilty in a Peoria, Ill., court Sunday of the murders of eight Chicago nurses, by a jury that fixed his punishment at death.

The jury of seven men and five women took only 40 minutes to reach a verdict after a two-week trial.

Vietnam

A series of clashes broke out Saturday in the Mekong delta south of Saigon, where American forces are trying to take control of areas long dominated by the Viet Cong, U.S. headquarters reported today.

Eleven Americans were reported killed and 20 wounded.

Lunar Probe

A lunar prospector known as Surveyor 3 was scheduled to be hurled toward the moon early this morning.

The vehicle carries a surface sampler, an instrument that can dig into the moon’s surface to give data on lunar soil.
