Ludowici Trap
Gov. Lester Maddox said today the small southeast Georgia town of Ludowici had slipped into its old speed trap ways and said there may be no alternative but to suspend Long County’s power of arrest. “This condition cannot be tolerated,” the governor said. “It’s shameful, it’s disgraceful.”
Mick’s Milestone
Only one person knew Mickey Mantle would hit his 500th home run Sunday. And she wasn’t even in the ballpark. “I called my wife last night and I told her on Mother’s Day,” Mantle revealed Sunday after he became the sixth player in history to hit 500 career homers.

Chuck Evert of Columbus, Ga., won the championship of the Southern Invitational Seniors tennis tournament yesterday. Evert, who is ranked No. 2 in the South behind Bitsy Grant of Altanta, polished off George Dunklin of Pine Bluff, Ark., in the semifinals, 6-1, 7-2.
