Fifty years ago today, June 5, 1967

Israel, Arabs at War

Fierce fighting broke out between Israeli and Egyptian forces, and each side said the other instigated combat.

Battles raged along the nations’ southern frontier. Cairo radio said Israeli planes bombed the Egyptian capital and “all parts of the United Arab Republic.”

United Nations

Security Council members today argued over words and interpretations in trying to produce a simple appeal for restraint by all parties in the Middle Eastern crisis.

Council members worked on several texts to be voted on when the UN reconvenes tomorrow afternoon.

Nixon Trip

Former Vice President Richard M. Nixon left on a personal fact-finding mission to the Middle East today, saying he felt an Israeli-Arab war could be averted “if all sides refrain from belligerent talk.”

But, he added, if negotiations fail, “responsibility for the failure will fall squarely on the shoulders of the Soviet Union.”
