Mideast War
Israel announced its troops captured the Egyptian fortress of Sharm el Sheikh today and broke the blockade of the Gulf of Aqaba. Unofficial reports said swift moving Israeli armored columns reached the Suez Canal while other troops seized the Jordanian sector of Jerusalem.
Asleep in Taxi
A Fort Benning soldier who has been absent without leave since Saturday was found at 4:30 a.m. today sleeping in a parked taxi on the Sanfort Road in Phenix City. Phenix City police said Nicholas William Zuraski, 20, had given no explanation for his absence from Fort Benning. He was to be taken back to the post later today.
Octagon House
The Historic Columbus Foundation (HCF) is now the owner of one of the most unique houses in America, the local Octagon House, 527 First Avenue. In announcing the acquisition, Mrs. Clarence Butler, HCF president, said, “I am exceedingly pleased that this distinguished landmark can be the Foundation’s first purchase.”
