Fifty years ago today, June 15, 1967

Vietnam

Premier Nguyen Cao Ky said today that 600,000 American troops are needed to win the war in Vietnam. There are now more than 462,000 United States troops in the country.

Draft Bill

The Senate today passed and sent to the House a compromise bill extending the military draft for four years and clearing the way for induction of 19-year-olds first.

Missing from the bill, however, was an administration recommendation for conscription by lottery.

United Nations

The UN Security Council this afternoon turned down a Russian resolution condemning Israel for aggression and demanding immediate withdrawal of its forces to the positions held on June 4, the day before the war with the Arabs erupted.
