Fifty years ago today, June 29, 1967

Crash Kills Star

Jayne Mansfield, the curvaceous “smartest dumb blonde” of movies, was killed early today when the chauffeured auto in which she was riding smashed into a slow-moving truck on a winding road. Miss Mansfield was 34. The smashup occurred 15 miles from downtown New Orleans.

Courthouse Vote

Approximately 20 percent of Muscogee County’s registered voters turned out Wednesday and approved the $5.2 million bond referendum, providing for the construction of a city-county courthouse and a $400,000 building for the Department of Family and Children Services.

Middle East

In a move attacked by President Johnson, Israel today was carrying out the annexation of old Jerusalem. Johnson said such “hasty” and one-sided action by Israel would make a “fair” solution to the Middle East conflict more difficult.
