Fifty years ago today, July 10, 1967

Mental Hospital

A State Health Department survey team is expected to come to Columbus within 60 days to see if a 100-acre tract of land on Schatulga Road is a suitable site for the proposed regional mental hospital. An engineering survey was requested by Sen. Steve Knight on behalf of local officials who want to be certain that nothing stands in the way of a regional mental hospital in Columbus.

Derby Winner

Now that the dust has settled and the excitement has somewhat died down, Steve Hill, this year’s Soap Box Derby champion is tired but happy. Steve, 15-year-old son of Sgt. and Mrs. Harry Hill, 4767 Wellborn Drive, won Sunday’s race in his fifth and last year of eligibility.

Two Escape

Warm Springs. Two prisoners escaped from the state prison branch near here early today after locking two guards in a cell and stealing a gun from one and a car from the other.
