Atlanta Expressway

State Highway Director Jim Gillis announced today that plans are being drafted to convert Georgia Route 85 between Columbus and Atlanta to a four lane road. The new four-lane route will tie to the end of the Columbus-Manchester Expressway in Harris County.

Silas Garrett Dies

Former Atty. Gen. Silas Garrett, indicted for the murder of Albert Patterson, one-time Democratic nominee for attorney general, died late Monday in Montgomery. Garrett was among three former state officials indicated in the Phenix City gangland murder of Albert Patterson, father of former Gov. John Patterson.

Scouts Stranded

Area Boy Scouts, on a 10-day Canadian goodwill tour, found themselves in the middle of anything but goodwill Sunday as they passed through Detroit on their way to Montreal. In Detroit, the boys were to spend the night in a Navy reserve armory, scout officials said today, which was located in the area of rioting which took hold of the nation’s fifth-largest city. Scout officials said the group was locked up in the armory Sunday afternoon and Sunday night under National Guard care.
