Basic Training

The Army Training Center (ATC), Infantry, at Fort Benning is being reduced by more than 15 percent, causing the deactivation of two training battalions and one of the three brigade headquarters. However, most of the personnel from the deactivated units will be shifted elsewhere in the Training Center, which will assume responsibility on Sept. 1 for operation of the newly organized 3rd Army NCO Academy.

GI Benefits

A bill greatly increasing a long list of benefits for veterans, including those who have served in Vietnam, has been sent President Johnson by the Senate.

Cab Driver Murder

Two Fort Benning soldiers have changed their earlier pleas of not guilty to guilty in the murder of a Columbus taxi driver last year. U.S. District Judge J. Robert Elliott will sentence them Sept. 13. Pfc Donald Gene Woolard, 18, and Pfc. Lee Edward Cook, 22, pleaded guilty to the shooting death and robbery of Joe H. Taylor, a retired Army sergeant who was found dead near his blood-stained taxicab last Dec. 22.
