Dirksen Defends LBJ

Senate GOP leader Everett M. Dirksen lectured fellow Republicans Tuesday for “demeaning” President Johnson in the eyes of the world and rejected calls for a letup in the Vietnam war effort.

‘GWTW’ Gala

The wine will be poured in Atlanta today when the screen of Loew’s Grant Theatre, where “Gone With the Wind” premiered in 1939, comes to life again with a newly restored version of the glory and the agony that was the Old South.

Festivities started Monday with a parade down Peachtree Street with Olivia de Havilland, who played Melanie Hamilton, riding near the front.

Sumter Funds Denied

The Americus and Sumter County Hospital Authority has been notified by the state Department of Public Health that matching Hill-Burton funds will not be available for a badly needed expansion project this year even though the local hospital had a high priority for them.
