Fifty years ago today, October 6, 1967

Infantry Museum

A nationwide campaign to build an Infantry Museum at Fort Benning will be held by the recently formed Infantry Museum Association. The association’s executive committee set a target date of fall 1969 for letting a contract for a building, and a completion date of fall 1970 or possibly spring 1971. The committee also voted to recommend to the trustees that a site on the main post, just east of Infantry Hall, be the location for the proposed new museum.

New Prison?

Columbus may be the site for a new $1 million prison for women. Georgia Corrections Director Asa Kelley said Thursday that Columbus is being considered for the facility. He indicated the city may be top choice.

Lummus Strike

A meeting Thursday of Lummus Cotton Gin Co. officials and representatives of the striking Machinists Union brought “no progress” in the strike, according to Lummus president Harold Lummus Sr.
