Secrecy

The special grand jury called to investigate the Columbus Police Department met in secrecy Wednesday after announcing a holiday recess. The foreman said today the recess is official now and will last until Dec. 28. Jack Favors announced late Wednesday afternoon the reason for holding the secret session after announcing a recess Tuesday was due partly to publicity-shy witnesses.

Flu Bug

An influenza epidemic which has spread through parts of Alabama and Georgia has not yet reached the Phenix City-Columbus area-but health officials in both cities warned that the flu bug is on its way.

Tuskegee Funds

Aides’ announced Wednesday that Gov. Lurleen B. Wallace has released the second state appropriation to predominantly Negro Tuskegee Institute. Mrs. Wallace, who cut out state aid to the private college in her budget request but later allowed the Legislature to reinstate an appropriation totaling $470,000, had threatened to withhold funds if federal courts ruled Alabama’s law providing state grants to students attending private schools unconstitutional.
