Brinkley

Congress is a lot like the Georgia General Assembly except it’s “a lot longer and covers a broader range of subjects,” says 3rd District Rep. Jack Brinkley, who just completed his freshman term in the House. Brinkley, who returned to Columbus from Washington last week, said he was often “tired, but never frustrated” during his first year at the Capitol.

Religion

A former criminal who faced the electric chair in two states for highway robbery is now a respected Valley resident. Jack Vines, a veteran of more than 30 years of crime, used to delight in telling prominent ministers in Georgia that he was an enthusiastic agnostic who had no religious belief. Today, he is a leading Baptist layman, a member of the West Point First Baptist Church and employed as a skilled electrician at the Lantuck division of West Point Pepperell Inc.

Christmas Contest

An 11-year-old Phenix City girl today was announced as the winner of The Ledger Christmas Coloring Contest. She received $15 first prize money. Angie Hendrix, 3000 Fourth Avenue, Phenix City, was selected the winner after three judges examined more than 400 entries submitted in the coloring event.
