Dr. Christiaan Barnard yesterday performed the third human heart transplant, on 58-year-old retired Cape Town, South Africa, dentist Philip Blaiberg. The donor was Clive Haupt, 24, who had died from a cerebral hemorrhage.

Education

President Lyndon Johnson on Monday signed the Bilingual Education Act into law, saying, “Thousands of children of Latin descent, young Indians, and others will get a better start — a better chance — in school.”

Vietnam

The 36-hour New Year cease-fire in the Vietnam War expired at 06000 hours local time; during the truce, there were 64 major violations by the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army (NVA), according to U.S. authorities.
