Fifty years ago today, January 14, 1968

Draft Vet Retires

After a quarter century on the Russell County draft board and many thousands of draftees, H.B. Hamner still feels that the selective service system is “the fairest that can be had.” Hamner, 4204 Summerville Road, retired January 1 from the draft board after serving since September of 1942. He was chairman of the board for 14 of those years. At the same time, until 1962, he was also superintendent of Russell County Schools, a post he had held since 1920.

Social Science Fair

Georgia counties, including Muscogee, have been invited to participate in the Columbus Regional Social Science Fair to be held here Feb. 13-15. The fair is sponsored by the State Department of Education and the Georgia Council for the Social Sciences, and is financed by Sears-Roebuck Foundation.

‘Get Slim’ Class

Phenix City Parks and Recreation will begin a “slimnastics” class for women Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Central High Gymnasium.
