Fifty years ago today, January 24, 1968

Mrs. Woodruff Dies

Mrs. Robert W. Woodruff, 74, Atlanta civic and health leader and wife of the chairman of the finance committee of the Coca-Cola Co., died Tuesday in an Albany hospital. Her husband, who was born in Columbus, has a number of Columbus relatives in the Woodruff and Swift families here.

If the city of Columbus sells its $5.1 million in bonds next Monday, construction of a new city-county governmental center is expected to be started by early 1969. “I think we will be able to let a construction contract within a year,” said Ed Neal, one of the architects for the new courthouse or governmental center.

Education

Muscogee County Commission voted Tuesday to borrow $4 million from three local banks on behalf of the Muscogee County School District. The funds, borrowed at 4 per cent, will be used by the school district for 1968 operations and will be repaid when taxes are collected at the end of the year.
