Man of the Year

South Columbus Merchants Association Friday night named police Sgt. Orville P. Carlile, 1243 Glenwood Road, “Man of the Year” at a banquet. Marion Taylor, president of the association, presented Carlile a plaque for his “outstanding contribution in the community.”

Butler Evacuation

A Central of Georgia freight train derailed in downtown Butler early today and butane gas fumes escaping from almost-empty tank cars caused a temporary evacuation of some 300 residents.
