Wallace Electors
Former Gov. George C. Wallace told a cheering State Democratic Executive Committee Saturday he will offer a slate of presidential electors pledged to him in the May primary and if the national parties do not offer a suitable platform he will be a nationwide presidential candidate.
Airport
Only time will tell when the new runway at Municipal Airport will be ready for use, said E.H. (Bud) Polleys, Columbus city engineer. A dozen or more “sinks” in the 4,000-foot paved runway at the city’s airport on Victory Drive have caused a year’s delay in opening the new airstrip.
Train Crash
A broken axle Saturday was blamed for the massive train derailment here that caused over 300 local residents to be temporarily routed from their homes, according to Police Chief R. C. Peacock. Derailing just before midnight Friday, the freight train wrecked in front of the depot here, strewing track and 32 cars across the yards.
