Fifty years ago today, January 30, 1968

City Bonds

Columbus City Commission Monday accepted a bid from The First National City Bank of New York and The Trust Company of Georgia with an interest rate of 4.3277 per cent for $5.1 million in general obligation bonds. The bonds will enable the city to make wholesale improvements in six community areas, including construction of a multimillion dollar city-county government center.

Police Case

The burglary conviction of former Columbus policeman G. L. Buntin has been reversed by the Georgia Court of Appeals. Buntin, who was convicted in Muscogee County Superior Court in September on two counts of burglary and sentenced to 5 years in prison, has won the right to a new trial through the court’s decision.

Business

Swift Spinning Mills Inc. of Columbus and Genesco Inc., giant in the manufacturing and distribution of apparel, have reached an agreement in principle to combine operations in what they described as a “pooling of interest.”
