Negro leaders have suspended a demonstration in Cordele until Monday amid spreading condemnation of a flag-ripping incident by two demonstrators Thursday.

The Bibb County chapter of the NAACP said members were “dismayed and outraged by the action of some irresponsible and misled youths.”

Forest Fires

Wind-whipped forest fires raged out of control this morning in south Russell County at Pittsview.

About 25 acres north and south of U.S. 431 were out of control at 10 a.m., rangers reported.
