Draft Evasion?
Suspicion that a large number of Muscogee County youths are attempting to evade the draft through use of false medical history statements has prompted an investigation by the Selective Service System. Col. Harry O. Smith, director of the draft in Georgia, said today the probe was launched after 74 of 88 would-be draftees in a single shipment from the county turned up with statements from their doctors showing medical defects.
Bomb Shortages
Secretary Defense Robert S. McNamara, who has spent more than 80 hours before congressional committees this year, faces more congressional questioning about bomb shortage charges and his readiness policies. Republican House Leader Gerald R. Ford said Thursday McNamara “will be asked many questions” after the House returns from its Easter recess.
Medals at Benning
Thirty-four medals, including seven Bronze Stars, will be given to 22 Fort Benning soldiers at a mass awards ceremony today. Maj. Gen. Robert H. York, Fort Benning commander, will award the decorations at the 11 a.m. ceremony in Marshall Auditorium.
