Wallace blasts newspapers
Gov. George Wallace and his wife, who is seeking to be Alabama’s first woman governor, campaigned in Birmingham Friday and, once again, the governor lashed out at the press. Wallace told crowds in East Lake and Woodlawn that “despite the press of Alabama, the people of the state have not been brainwashed.”
Rights Fight
A call to arms for Southern senators to begin planning opposition to the 1966 Civil Rights Bill has been issued by Sen. Richard B. Russell. Sen. Russell hopes to hold a strategy meeting early next week.
Religion
With eight denominations now participating instead of the original four, the consultation on church union is moving into a crucial new stage of its five-year-old effort to establish a united Protestant church. At a meeting in Dallas, Tex, next week May 2-5, the consultation will begin brass tacks discussion of an actual plan of union.
